Gabrielle Giffords Shot

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head by a gunman at a public event in Tucson on Saturday. There are conflicting reports about whether she was killed. The Pima County, Ariz., sheriff’s office told member station KJZZ the 40-year-old Democrat was killed. A hospital spokeswoman said Giffords was in critical condition and undergoing surgery.

At least eight other people, including members of her staff, were injured. There also were conflicting reports on the number of deaths at the scene, but President Obama, in a statement, said “we know that some have passed away” and that Giffords was “gravely wounded.”

Giffords (born June 8, 1970) is an American politician and the U.S. Representative for Arizona’s 8th congressional district. She is a member of the Democratic Party, and was the third woman in Arizona’s history to be elected to serve in the U.S. Congress. The district encompasses the southeastern part of the state. It includes all of Cochise County and parts of Pima, Pinal, and Santa Cruz counties.

John Boehner Victory Speech (Transcript)

Here is the full text of his speech, which he made at the Election Night Results Watch in the Grand Hyatt Ballroom in Washington DC:
“Let me just say this: it’s clear who the winners are tonight, and that’s the American people. Your voice was heard at the ballot box! Your voice!
“Listen, I’ll be brief, because we have real work to do – and this is not a time for celebration, not when one in 10 of our fellow citizens are out of work, not when we have buried our children under a mountain of debt, not when our Congress is held in such low esteem.

2010 Election Winners And Losers

Republicans increasing their power across the board—taking back control of the U.S. House, closing the gap with Democrats in the Senate, and capturing key governorships—it’s worth taking a closer look at how select races of special interest to business were decided. 2010 Senate/House/Governors Election Results

The House of Representatives

South Carolina-5: House Budget Chairman John Spratt lost to GOP state senator Mick Mulvaney in a district that hasn’t been represented by a Republican in more than a century. Spratt, who had been in the House since 1983, was far from being a liberal yet business groups waged an independent campaign against him and said he was a big supporter of “Nancy Pelosi’s agenda.” Read more

2010 Senate/House/Governors Election Results

Republicans drew on the support of independents and the energy of tea party activists to fashion a resounding victory in the House in midterm elections, increased their strength in the Senate and quickly served notice they intend to challenge Obama with a conservative approach to the economy. A Republican resurgence, propelled by deep economic worries and a forceful opposition to the Democratic agenda of health care and government spending, delivered defeats to House Democrats from the Northeast to the South and across the Midwest. Obama’s Speech Interupted By Gay Rights Protesters

“The protests brought the speech to a halt, and the protesters did not lower their voices after others in the crowd urged them to end their shouting.”

“What about ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell?’” one protester shouted. “We are going to do that,” Obama replied. “We are going to repeal don’t ask, don’t tell.”

Five minutes later, the protesters interrupted Obama again, shouting, “It’s time for equality for all Americans,” to which he responded, “Can I just say again Barbara and I are supportive of repealing don’t ask, don’t tell?”

Abdullah Pulls Out Of Afghan Election

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah says his decision is “final,” “I will not participate in the election.” Dr. Abdullah told supporters, saying his demands for ensuring a fraud-free election had not been met. An investigation by the UN-backed Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) led to Mr Karzai’s share of the vote dropping to 49.67% – below the crucial 50% plus one vote threshold needed to avoid a second round. Dr. Abdullah was adjudged in the end to have won about 31% of valid votes cast. Abdullah said his decision had not been made “in exchange for anything from anybody, but only and purely in the interests of the people of Afghanistan and to give the people of Afghanistan a chance to move on.”
