CNN reporter Emily Chang was detained for two hours today in Shanghai for holding up a T-shirt depicting Obama’s face imprinted over that of Communist dictator Mao Zedong bearing the Chinese characters depict the Maoist slogan “Serve the People,” written in Mao’s calligraphy. On the back, it reads “Oba Mao” in English. Mao Zedong 毛泽东, was a Chinese revolutionary, political theorist and Communist leader. He led the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976. His contribution to Marxism-Leninism, military strategies, and his brand of Communist policies are now collectively known as Maoism. The Communist Party assumed control of all media in the country. Mao “served” nearly 50 million of “the people” fifty years ago.
Chang bought the T-shirt at a basement souvenir shop in Beijing and brought it with her to Shanghai as she covers President Obama’s visit to the city.” Two security guards happened to pass by at the moment Chang held up the shirt up for a live shot outside a Shanghai metro stop. The shirts have been seen in Chinese shops for months, but were “banned” ahead of Obama’s trip.
