Rio De Janeiro will stage the next Olympics in 2016. Michelle and Barack Obama’s mission to bring the Olympics to America has failed. Rio De Janeiro has beat out Chicago, Tokyo, and Madrid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. This will be the first Olympics in South America, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva broke into tears of joy. Obama went to the IOC for a speech why Chicago should be given the right to hold the Olympics. He failed big time.
A passionate presentation by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva presented a world map showing South America and Africa as a blank Olympic spot, helped sway the votes. “Rio is ready, give us this chance and you will not regret it,” Lula said.
“I honestly believe it’s Rio’s time…It would send a powerful message that the Olympics belong to all continents, all humanity.” President Obama, his wife Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey were left empty-handed, with the US city surprisingly going out in the first round of voting, taking only 18 of the 94 votes cast. Tokyo was eliminated in the second voting round, and Madrid were then beaten in the deciding vote.
Rio highlighted the positive social impact the Olympics would have on the city. They spoke of accommodation and a proposed budget of $11 billion. They opted to build three villages – one for the media, one for the athletes, and one for technical officials – and to make the most of accommodation in large cruise ships and guaranteeing the required 48,000 beds.
The Obama’s could only speak of family members that love the Olympic Games, their roots in Chicago and how Barack worked with different people in the city when he moved there, no mentioning of accommodations, budgets, hotel stay.
Lula sobbed into a handkerchief at the official news conference after Rio won a comprehensive 66-32 victory over Madrid in a third and final round of voting. Tears also flowed again when he was hugged and kissed by football great Pele minutes after the city was confirmed. Pele cried as he ran among Brazilian bodies and flags.
In Rio de Janeiro, tens of thousands of people turned out to see who won the right to host the 2016 Olympics. They sang and danced, as he IOC confirmed that Rio was the winner. “You won’t regret it,” said Lula. Neither will the millions of competitors, officials and tourists. The trains might not run on time. But they’ll have a great time waiting for them.
