Indonesian Muslim Students Protest Obama

Scores of Islamic students staged protests outside Jakarta’s parliament and in at least three other major Indonesian cities on Friday against President Barack Obama’s upcoming visit to this predominantly Muslim country.
The students carried banners branding Obama as an enemy of Islam and an imperialist in downtown Jakarta as well as in the provincial capitals Padang, Yogyakarta and Surabaya.

(AP Photo/Binsar Bakkara) They also threw shoes at large pictures of Obama’s head. “Just like Bush, he is a war president and an enemy of Islam,” protest coordinator Fikri Ahmad Irhamul told AFP.
“He sent thousands of soldiers to Afghanistan, and many of our Muslim brothers have died because of him,” Irhamul said.

Obama agreed Friday to postpone his trip to Asia, signaling his commitment to swift action on his signature health care bill as Democrats in Congress prepared for action next week and expanded the bill’s scope to include a popular student aid initiative. The plan will move his departure from Thursday to March 21, will enable him to remain active in pushing Democrats toward approval of his signature domestic initiative. Hum.
