Obama Commentating At Basketball Game

This is one of those posting not related to Obama’s politics. Obama is doing what he does best, talking about basketball.  Obama provided about seven minutes of nationally televised basketball commentary during Saturday’s Duke-Georgetown game at the Verizon Center near the White House. Obama arrived approximately three minutes before tip-off. Biden arrived and sat next to Obama. Shortly after the second half began, the president was seated between CBS announcers Verne Lundquist and Clark Kellogg. “After retirement, I’m coming after your job, Clark,” Obama replied. “I’m just letting you know. So you either have three more years or seven more years.”

NATO Airstrike Kills 4 Afghan Troops

NATO forces today called in an airstrike that killed at least four Afghan troops in the second lethal “friendly fire” incident in less than three months. Officials suggested that in the darkness, the Afghan soldiers manning a nearby base might have mistaken the patrol for insurgents and fired the shots.Karzai has long been a harsh critic of accidental killings of Afghan civilians by foreign forces. The strike in Wardak province came one day after Western forces shot and killed two Afghan civilians as their taxi approached a patrol in Ghazni province, and two days after American troops killed an Afghan motorist — an imam, or mosque preacher — as he was driving near their convoy in Kabul.

France Recommends A Burka Ban

The full-body garments are a security issue in places like banks and subways where people need to be identifiable. A parliamentary committee said, Muslim women should not be allowed to wear burkas in public institutions, including banks, post offices, schools and even on public transportation. The committee reduced its recommendation to a nonbinding resolution condemning the burka as “contrary to the values of the Republic.” The burka controversy has become part of a debate over French identity and anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment. The government estimates that nearly 2,000 women wear the burka in France, home to about 5 million Muslims.

Russia Stealth Fighter Jet

The Russian military conducted the first successful flight of its new fifth-generation stealth fighter jet on Friday. The Sukhoi T-50 or PAK FA flew a 47-minute test run. It is expected to replace MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-27. The jet is made to compete American F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. It can develop speed as fast as 2100km/h and it can fly approximately 5500 kilometers up above the sky. It can take off from short runways like 300-400 meters long.

The T-50 is the domestic name of Russia’s fifth-generation fighter plane which has been developed as the Advanced Front-Line Aviation Complex (PAK FA) for Russia’s Air Force. The project started its development by the Sukhoi design bureau since it won the tender in April 2002. The Tikhomirov Institute of Instrument Design, which developed the Irbis radar for the Su-35BM Flanker, has been working on the T-50 radar. The fighter’s radar and fire-control system will be designed on the basis of the Su-35BM’s systems. The fighter’s exterior design was approved on December 10, 2004. Last summer, the fighter’s design was approved, and the prototype blueprints were delivered to the KNAAPO aircraft building company based in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, where three experimental fighters will be built for testing. In February 2009, the first prototype was constructed. Although T-50 specifications remain classified, fragmentary data on its engines imply that this heavy-duty fighter will have a take-off weight of more than 30 metric tons and will be close in dimension to the well-known Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker. The exterior was designed using Stealth technology, also known as LO technology (low observable technology). The aircraft is fitted with 117S (upgraded AL-31) turbofan engines from the Russian aircraft engine manufacturer Saturn. The PAK FA can carry either eight next-generation air-to-air R-77 missiles, or two large controllable anti-ship bombs weighing 1,500 kg each. The jet can also carry two long-range missiles developed by the Novator Bureau which can hit targets within a 400 kilometer range. The fighter is equipped with advanced avionics to combine an automatic flight control system and a radar locator with a phased array antenna. The aircraft plans are to be mass produced in Komsomolsk-on-Amur from 2015.

George H.W. Bush And Jeb Bush Visits Obama

Former President George H.W. Bush and his son, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush visited President Barack Obama in the Oval Office. Two weeks ago former President George W. Bush, was at the White House talking about Haiti relief with Obama and former President Bill Clinton. The Bushes were at the White House for just over a half-hour. The White House described it as a social call.

Obama Announces $6B Arms Sale To Taiwan

The Obama administration announced the sale of $6 billion worth of Patriot anti-missile systems, helicopters, mine-sweeping ships and communications equipment to Taiwan. The Obama administration says weapons sales to Taiwan help to maintain stability in East Asia by making it more difficult for Beijing to bully Taiwan. China strongly urges the U.S. side to fully recognize the gravity of the issue and revoke the decision on arms sales to Taiwan and stop selling any weapons to Taiwan. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and contends that U.S. arms sales to the island as gross intervention into China’s internal affairs. Taiwan is facing about 1,400 short-range ballistic missiles from China and plans to deploy the new PAC-3s in the central and southern regions of Taiwan. Taiwan has been awaiting the release of congressional notifications since the Bush administration approved the sale of eight diesel submarines in 2001. Taiwan has an urgent need for new utility helicopters to replace ageing UH-1H “Huey” helicopters procured during the 1980s. Over the past month, at least six senior Chinese officials have warned the Obama administration not to sell the weapons to Taiwan, and some have raised the possibility that China might sanction the companies involved.
The United States is legally obligated to provide weapons for Taiwan’s defense, under the Taiwan Relations Act. The U.S. Congress has 30 days to comment on the newest arms sales before the plan goes forward. The United States is Taiwan’s most important ally and largest arms supplier. The last US arms package for Taiwan, announced under previous president George W. Bush in October 2008, also led China to cut off military relations with the United States temporarily. The Chinese government has reacted badly. Vice-Foreign Minister He Yafai delivered a protest to the U.S. ambassador in Beijing, Jon Huntsman. China said it was suspending military exchanges with the United States protesting the arms sells. It is not clear if the People’s Liberation Army will begin moving missile launchers to appropriate positions and make other moves to threaten an attack if Washington does not cancel the deal.

Obama Calls For New Job, AGAIN!

Obama devoted two-thirds of his State Of The Union speech to economic issues, using the word “job” or “jobs” 29 times and pledging that job creation would be “our number one focus in 2010.” Saying, “For every success story, there are other stories, of men and women who wake up with the anguish of not knowing where their next paycheck will come from, who send out resumes week after week and hear nothing in response. That is why jobs must be our number-one focus in 2010, and that’s why I’m calling for a new jobs bill tonight.” How long has Obama been running around the country talking about job creation?

State Of The Union Overview

The speech/campaign was under 90 minutes.  Nobody yelled “you lie.” Republicans stood and clapped at several points. Obama took responsibility for failing to make the case for health care reform.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton did not attend Obama’s State of the Union/campaign, claiming she had to attend a conference in London. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan was designated by the White House to ride out the speech in an undisclosed location as a precaution against the possibility of a catastrophe wiping out the rest of the government leadership. Can you believe this? The truth is, Clinton didn’t want to attend another boring speech that Obama has been given for a whole year. Clinton has already stated that she will be a One Term Secretary of State, not by choice. The media has tried to make the conference on Yemen and Afghanistan more important then the State of the Union. What are aides for? They are the one’s you send to mediocre events, right? Well Shaun Donovan did her job!

From the speech: ” I have never been more hopeful about America’s future than I am tonight. Despite our hardships, our union is strong. We do not give up. We do not quit. We do not allow fear or division to break our spirit.”

“If there’s one thing that has unified Democrats and Republicans and everybody in between it’s that we all hated the bank bailout. I hated it. I hated it. I hated it. You hated it. It was about as popular as a root canal.”

“For every success story, there are other stories, of men and women who wake up with the anguish of not knowing where their next paycheck will come from, who send out resumes week after week and hear nothing in response. That is why jobs must be our number-one focus in 2010, and that’s why I’m calling for a new jobs bill tonight.”

” I’m proposing that we take $30 billion of the money Wall Street banks have repaid and use it to help community banks give small businesses the credit they need to stay afloat. I’m also proposing a new small-business tax credit, one that will go to over 1 million small businesses who hire new workers or raise wages. While we’re at it, let’s also eliminate all capital gains taxes on small-business investment and provide a tax incentive for all large businesses and all small businesses to invest in new plants and equipment.”

Alito saying, “Not True”

“I know that there are those who disagree with the overwhelming scientific evidence on climate change. But here’s the thing. Even if you doubt the evidence, providing incentives for energy efficiency and clean energy are the right thing to do for our future, because the nation that leads the clean-energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy, and America must be that nation.”

“We will double our exports over the next five years, an increase that will support 2 million jobs in America.”

” I didn’t choose to tackle this issue to get some legislative victory under my belt. And by now, it should be fairly obvious that I didn’t take on health care because it was good politics.”

“Starting in 2011, we are prepared to freeze government spending for three years. Spending related to our national security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will not be affected, but all other discretionary government programs will.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano fell asleep.
“With all due deference to separation of powers, last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests, including foreign corporations, to spend without limit in our elections. I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests or, worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people. And I urge Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps correct some of these problems.”

“What frustrates the American people is a Washington where every day is Election Day. We can’t wage a perpetual campaign where the only goal is to see who can get the most embarrassing headlines about the other side, a belief that if you lose, I win. Neither party should delay or obstruct every single bill just because they can.”

“If the Republican leadership is going to insist that 60 votes in the Senate are required to do any business at all in this town, a supermajority, then the responsibility to govern is now yours, as well. Just saying no to everything may be good short-term politics, but it’s not leadership.”

“ We will support — we will support the Iraqi government — we will support the Iraqi government as they hold elections, and we will continue to partner with the Iraqi people to promote regional peace and prosperity. But make no mistake: This war is ending, and all of our troops are coming home.”

” This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are. It’s the right thing to do.”
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid also seemed a little sleepy, yawning throughout the speech/campaign.

” I campaigned on the promise of change, change we can believe in, the slogan went. And right now, I know there are many Americans who aren’t sure if they still believe we can change, or that I can deliver it. But remember this: I never suggested that change would be easy or that I could do it alone. Democracy in a nation of 300 million people can be noisy and messy and complicated. And when you try to do big things and make big changes, it stirs passions and controversy. That’s just how it is.”

” The spirit that has sustained this nation for more than two centuries lives on in you, its people. We have finished a difficult year. We have come through a difficult decade. But a new year has come. A new decade stretches before us. We don’t quit. I don’t quit. Let’s seize this moment, to start anew, to carry the dream forward, and to strengthen our union once more.”

Obama failed to offer a clear direction forward for health care reform, seemingly implying that it’s anything goes.  The Speech was Very Boring. Obama added nothing new to what he has been saying for the past year.

ACORN Pimp James O’Keefe Arrested At Landrieu’s Office

Independent filmmaker James O’Keefe was arrested this week along with three others, including the son of a federal prosecutor, and accused of trying to interfere with the phones at Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office. O’Keefe exposed the illegal operations of the liberal group ACORN by posing as a pimp on hidden camera. O’Keefe, accompanied by a young woman posing as a prostitute, shot videos in various ACORN offices where staffers appeared to offer illegal tax advice and to support the misuse of public funds and illegal trafficking in children. O’Keefe is now accused in an attempt to tamper with phone lines at Landrieu’s office inside a federal building. It’s not clear what O’Keefe was trying to accomplish.

Landrieu secured as much as $300-million for Louisiana’s medicaid program for her vote allowing debate to begin on the national health care bill. Landrieu told her fellow senators she is “proud” of the move she made. Critics have called her actions “the new Louisiana Purchase.” Her father, Moon Landrieu, was a celebrated mayor of New Orleans and Housing and Urban Development Secretary in the Carter administration. Her brother, Mitch Landrieu, is the state’s lieutenant governor. In 2008, Landrieu, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, won some $470 million in funding for projects targeted to her state.

O’Keefe was already sitting in the waiting area and recorded Robert Flanagan and Joseph Basel showed up claiming to be telephone repairmen. A fourth man, Stan Dai, 24, was also arrested. The men wore white hard harts, tool belts and flourescent vests and said they needed to fix a problem with the phone system. According to an FBI affidavit. Click here to read the affidavit. Flanagan and Basel asked for access to the main phone at the reception desk. After handling the phone, Flanagan and Basel next requested access to the telephone closet because they needed to perform work on the main telephone system. It is not clear why O’Keefe wanted to interfere with Landrieu’s phones. One of the suspects was picked up in a car a couple of blocks away with a listening device that could pick up transmissions. Democrats are calling the plot a “Louisiana Watergate.”

O’Keefe said only “veritas,” Latin for truth, as he left jail with suspects Stan Dai and Joseph Basel. As he got into a cab outside the jail, O’Keefe said, “The truth shall set me free.” Flanagan recently criticized Landrieu for her vote on the Senate health care bill. Flanagan wrote in a Nov. 25 post on the Web site for the Pelican Institute, “Do not be fooled into believing Landrieu is helping the state of Louisiana.” His father, Bill, is the acting U.S. Attorney based in Shreveport. He was first assistant under President George W. Bush appointee Donald Washington before Washington stepped down this month. Dai, who was arrested outside the building, is a former assistant director of a program at Trinity Washington University that taught students about careers in intelligence. He was also active in the conservative newspaper and other organizations at George Washington University. O’Keefe and Basel are also active in conservative publications at their respective colleges, Rutgers University and the University of Minnesota-Morris. If convicted, each suspect faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up $250,000 and three years of supervised release following any prison term, according the Justice Department.

Obama Call For Spending Freezes

Obama will seek a three-year freeze on domestic spending in his 2011 budget that would save $250 billion by 2020. Obama will outline the spending freeze in his State of the Union address on Wednesday. Details will be presented February 1. outlook.

Transcript Of First McCain/Obama Debate

From the transcript: LEHRER: What I’m trying to get at this is this. Excuse me if I may, senator. Trying to get at that you all — one of you is going to be the president of the United States come January. At the — in the middle of a huge financial crisis that is yet to be resolved. And what I’m trying to get at is how this is going to affect you not in very specific — small ways but in major ways and the approach to take as to the presidency.

MCCAIN: How about a spending freeze on everything but defense, veteran affairs and entitlement programs.

LEHRER: Spending freeze?

MCCAIN: I think we ought to seriously consider with the exceptions the caring of veterans national defense and several other vital issues.

LEHRER: Would you go for that?

OBAMA: The problem with a spending freeze is you’re using a hatchet where you need a scalpel. There are some programs that are very important that are under funded. I went to increase early childhood education and the notion that we should freeze that when there may be, for example, this Medicare subsidy doesn’t make sense.

Let me tell you another place to look for some savings. We are currently spending $10 billion a month in Iraq when they have a $79 billion surplus. It seems to me that if we’re going to be strong at home as well as strong abroad, that we have to look at bringing that war to a close.

MCCAIN: Look, we are sending $700 billion a year overseas to countries that don’t like us very much. Some of that money ends up in the hands of terrorist organizations. We have to have wind, tide, solar, natural gas, flex fuel cars and all that but we also have to have offshore drilling and we also have to have nuclear power.

Senator Obama opposes both storing and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. You can’t get there from here and the fact is that we can create 700,000 jobs by building constructing 45 new nuclear power plants by the year 2030. Nuclear power is not only important as far as eliminating our dependence on foreign oil but it’s also responsibility as far as climate change is concerned and the issue I have been involved in for many, many years and I’m proud of the work of the work that I’ve done there along with President Clinton.

LEHRER: Before we go to another lead question. Let me figure out a way to ask the same question in a slightly different way here. Are you — are you willing to acknowledge both of you that this financial crisis is going to affect the way you rule the country as president of the United States beyond the kinds of things that you have already — I mean, is it a major move? Is it going to have a major affect?

OBAMA: There’s no doubt it will affect our budgets. There is no doubt about it. Not only — Even if we get all $700 billion back, let’s assume the markets recover, we’ holding assets long enough that eventually taxpayers get it back and that happened during the Great Depression when Roosevelt purchased a whole bunch of homes, over time, home values went back up and in fact government made a profit. If we’re lucky and do it right, that could potentially happen but in the short term there’s an outlay and we may not see that money for a while.

And because of the economy’s slowing down, I think we can also expect less tax revenue so there’s no doubt that as president I’m go doing have to make some tough decision.

The only point I want to make is this, that in order to make the tough decisions we have to know what our values are and who we’re fighting for and our priorities and if we are spending $300 billion on tax cuts for people who don’t need them and weren’t even asking for them, and we are leaving out health care which is crushing on people all across the country, then I think we have made a bad decision and I want to make sure we’re not shortchanging our long term priorities.

MCCAIN: Well, I want to make sure we’re not handing the health care system over to the federal government which is basically what would ultimately happen with Senator Obama’s health care plan. I want the families to make decisions between themselves and their doctors. Not the federal government. Look. We have to obviously cut spending. I have fought to cut spending. Senator Obama has $800 billion in new spending programs. I would suggest he start by canceling some of those new spending program that he has.

We can’t I think adjust spending around to take care of the very much needed programs, including taking care of our veterans but I also want to say again a healthy economy with low taxes would not raising anyone’s taxes is probably the best recipe for eventually having our economy recover.

And spending restraint has got to be a vital part of that. And the reason, one of the major reasons why we’re in the difficulties we are in today is because spending got out of control. We owe China $500 billion. And spending, I know, can be brought under control because I have fought against excessive spending my entire career. And I got plans to reduce and eliminate unnecessary and wasteful spending and if there’s anybody here who thinks there aren’t agencies of government where spending can be cut and their budgets slashed they have not spent a lot of time in Washington.

OBAMA: I just want to make this point, Jim. John, it’s been your president who you said you agreed with 90 percent of the time who presided over this increase in spending. This orgy of spending and enormous deficits you voted for almost all of his budgets. So to stand here and after eight years and say that you’re going to lead on controlling spending and, you know, balancing our tax cuts so that they help middle class families when over the last eight years that hasn’t happened I think just is, you know, kind of hard to swallow.

Obama’s spending freeze proposal would:

* Freeze discretionary spending not associated with national security.

* Nearly double the value of the child- and dependent-care tax credit for middle-class families earning less than $85,000 a year. All households earning under $115,000 will see a credit increase.

* Add $1.6 billion to child-care funding assistance, the largest one-year increase in 20 years, to help an additional 235,000 children.

* Cap a student’s federal loan payments to 10% of income above a set living allowance. The White House says this would lower payments for hundreds of thousands of graduates.

* Set up a system of workplace IRAs by requiring employers to offer direct-deposit IRAs to their workers.

* Expand tax credits to match retirement savings.

* Enact safeguards to protect retirement savings.

* Increase support for families caring for elderly relatives, and for seniors who want to stay in their homes.
