Obama Sends Wreath to Confederate Memorial
Dear President Obama: Since the administration of Woodrow Wilson, presidents have sent annually a wreath to the Arlington Confederate Monument. Prior to the administration of George H. W. Bush, this was done on or near the birthday of Jefferson Davis. Starting with George H.W. Bush, it has been done on Memorial Day.
We ask you to not send a wreath or some other commemorative token to the Arlington Confederate Monument during your administration or after.
This letter was written by Edward Sebesta and James Loewen. (click to view letter) It goes on in detail explaining their reason for sending Obama this letter. Despite this appeal for Obama to end a presidential tradition dating back to Woodrow Wilson, Barack Obama sent a Memorial Day wreath to the Confederate Monument at Arlington Cemetery.
In their letter they mention that the monument is a “denial of the wrong committed against African Americans by slave owners, Confederates, and neo-Confederates.” The signers want to end glorification of the Civil War and recognize the Confederacy’s links to slavery, legitimizing the Confederacy. Sebesta, Loewen and scholars from dozens of schools had hoped our first black president would end the decades old tradition. One thing Sebesta and Loewen has forgotten… Obama is considered half WHITE.
Sebesta and Loewen you have to take Obama as he is, half white. That white side of Obama has the traditions and history you are speaking against. That white side of Obama has the history Confederacy’s links to slavery. That white side of Obama doesn’t want to break with history. Sebesta and Loewen mentioned a symbol of white nationalism, portrayed in opposition to the multiracial democracy of Reconstruction, and a celebration of the re-establishment of white supremacy in the former slave states by former Confederate soldiers, remember Sebesta and Loewen Obama is half white.
Naturally the White House officials did not confirm that they were aware of the petition. Obama will honor his founding fathers history, a wreath sent to his past kin folks, the Confederates. Sebesta stated that news of Obama’s decision is “very disappointing”. This will not be the only controversial subject Obama will face. Obama … Black, White, Muslim, and Christian. What side will he take in future decisions.
What’s your take.
